About Biodyne

Biodyne is an Indiana-based company providing innovative microbiological solutions to address environmental challenges.

Overview

Having heard of Scientific Bioprocessing through a webinar, Biodyne's Vice President of Microbiology reached out to find out more information about the Cell Growth Quantifier (CGQ). In an effort to optimize their bioprocess, researchers would change different factors from run to run but they needed a better and more consistent means to compare the results. Additionally, as Biodyne is not a 24hr facility, they were looking for a way to monitor their experiments around-the-clock, including overnights and weekends.

Why Choose the CGQ?

It was concluded that the CGQ was the perfect tool for achieving real-time data from their strain selection experiments and removed the need for manual sampling, a process that previously took valuable time and resources away from the staff. Biodyne purchased the CGQ and it was installed in their laboratory.

The Problem Biodyne Encountered

Experiments started to run but it was noticed that there were large increases in sample growth that would occur over the weekend and then on each weekday, starting around 6pm and lasting until around 8am the next day. This pattern was consistent for the sample across multiple runs. The issue was raised to the sbi Application Science Team.

Working with the Application Science Team

After reviewing the data and speaking further with the Biodyne team about the situation, it was concluded that the samples were being affected by the ambient light in the laboratory. sbi's Application Scientist recommended putting a cover over the front window of the incu-shaker during experiments to reduce the influence of external light.

The Conclusion

With the incu-shaker darkened, there was clear improvement in the results obtained from the CGQ readings. Data provided from the CGQ helped scientists at Biodyne to better understand how their samples were growing and peaking. They also observed significant time-savings when switching from manual to automated sampling.
